The concept of Transit-Oriented Development(TOD)was first proposed by Peter Calthorpe, one of the advocates of New Urbanism,in 1992.It was originally designed to inspire profound reflections on the cities of the United States that were dominated by automobile transportation and on its urban sprawl that was dominated by suburban expansion-the concept aimed to enhance land use density and efficiency and the vitality of the urban center and to improve issues related to environment and energy through public transit-oriented land use development.Since TOD was proposed,it has been widely used in the United States, and has had an obvious effect on East Asian cities with dense populations, limited development land, and high urban density.
