Reading notes on Quli from Book of Rites

《礼记.曲礼上》云:“博闻强识而让,敦善行而不怠,谓之君子。君子不尽人之欢,不竭人之忠,以全交也。”王文锦将该段译为:“有广博的知识,有很强的记忆能力,而且能够谦恭礼让,努力完善自己的行为而不懈怠,这样的人就可以称作君子。作为君子不能毫不收敛地尽情地接受别人对自己的欢迎款待,同时也不能过分地要求别人对自己无限的忠诚,这样才能保全交情。”

According to Quli(I)from The Book of Rites,“A man who has wide learning and a retentive memory but remains humble and courteous,and who works hard and does good deeds but never gets bored can be called a gentleman.As a gentleman,he never asks his friends to pretend to be happy with him against their will and never asks his friends to offer their total loyalty to him.In doing so,his sole purpose is to preserve their friendship.”
