The drama creation and theory of Yu Yue the Confucianist

俞樾以经学家的身份,从事戏曲研究与戏曲创作,重视戏曲的教化功能,提出戏曲要有益于教化;将戏曲研究作为治学的内容,主张戏曲要有功于经学;对于戏曲的音律、语言等艺术形式,推崇自然。他所创作的《骊山传》与《梓潼传》传奇,以戏曲的形式,分别对骊山女和梓潼文君作了考证和研究。

As a famous Confucianist,Yu Yue engaged in drama research and drama creation.He attached great importance to the educational function of drama and proposed that drama should be beneficial to the edification of the masses.The study of traditional Chinese drama was regarded as the content of his academic research,and he also stressed that traditional Chinese drama should play an active role in the study of Confucian classics.Yu Yue advocated that to be natural is of importance concerning such artistic forms as the music and language of a drama.He created the legends of Lishan Mountain and Zitong Mountain,and did some research on the Lishan Woman and Zitong Wenjun respectively in the form of drama.
