China’s Economic Reform and Chinese Management Research:Another Look at the Relationship Between the Absorption of Western Theories and Indigenous Theoretical Innovation

本文通过回顾中国改革开放的过程、方式和结果,再次探讨在中国管理研究中吸收西方理论与本地创新的关系。首先,讨论不断变革的制度环境对中国管理学研究带来的机会与挑战以及中国管理学研究是否应建立一个独立理论体系的问题。其次,用现有的战略管理研究实例,演示若干个西方经济和管理理论在中国管理研究中的应用,并通过研究中国管理问题的应用和创新对这些理论做出的进一步深化和发展。最后,对中国不断变革的制度环境对企业与企业家的能力及行为取向可能产生的影响提出一些初步看法。

This paper takes another look at the relationship between absorbing Western theories and undertaking indigenous theoretical innovation in Chinese management research,particularly from the perspective of the process,approach and outcome of China’s economic reform and opening to the outside world. I first discuss the opportunities and challenges that a changing institutional environment may provide for Chinese management research and address the question whether Chinese management scholars should strive to establish an independent theoretical system. Next,using several extant studies in strategic management that apply Western economic and management theories to questions in Chinese management research,I illustrate how these studies contributed to the deepening and further development of those theories through theoretical innovation. Finally,I offer some conjectures concerning the influences of the changing institutional environment in China on the capabilities and behavioral tendencies of Chinese firms and entrepreneurs.
