The sanshu legal reportages appearing in the Qin bamboo slips collected at the Yuelu Academy contain the‘san’character. The original authors interpreted this as the meaning of‘breaking up’.Following this interpretation, the authors also suggested that the‘san’character appearing in another bamboo slip should be interpreted as the same.Judging from the meaning and writing, interpreting the meaning of this character as‘breaking up’not only does not make sense, but makes the two related legal reportages contradictory to each other.Through historical analysis and literal interpretation, this article suggests that the‘san’character appearing in the bamboo slips should be interpreted as‘abstract’.This new interpretation makes the two related bamboo slips read smoothly with concordant meaning.
