A Discussion on Choosing the Appropriate Queen in the Period of Yuanyou

元祐立后由太皇太后高氏主导,她与宰执反复商榷皇后人选、斟酌勘婚之说,力求“要令天下无可指议”,最终决定立“门户静”的孟氏女为哲宗皇后。在高氏与宰执看来,“幽闲专静”的孟氏女可以协助皇帝“正家”“正国”,实现“朝廷安静”“增美国家之治理”。高氏与臣僚在制定立后仪制时表现出的观念差异,反映出朝廷内部对是否效法三代存在着难以弥合的分歧。

The choice of the queen was led by the grandma-empress Gao,who repeatedly discussed with the prime ministers about the selection of the queen,revised the wedding ceremony,and tried to not be blamed,and finally decided to choose Meng who was a“quiet”girl as the queen of Zhezong.In the view of Gao and her prime ministers,Meng could assist the emperor in his home and country,so as to realize“the quiet of the court”and“the governance of the country”.The difference of ideas between Gao and her officials in the establishment of the wedding ceremony reflects that there was a huge difference in the court about whether to imitate the three dynasties.
