《现代评论》是沈从文早期作品的主要发表平台之一。沈从文在文学立场和意气上与《现代评论》同人相合,加之该刊较偏重于文艺且着力提携新人的办刊方针,促使沈从文成为了该刊新进作家。在其发表于该刊的新文学习作中,建立于自身个人体验与自然情感评判之上、由乡土与都市两大基本主题所形成的整体性审美构架已初现端倪,但城乡之间的对立格局界限分明。这一方面显示出由于文化体验与观念的差异,沈从文与《现代评论》同人之间精神上的隔阂与理解的无可企望;另一方面也意味着由于最终无法回避现代意识与外部世界对乡土的影响,他在城乡之间纯粹的情感与价值选择之间必须予以调整。

Modern Review was one of the main publishing platforms for Shen Congwen’s early writings.Shen became a new writer of Modern Review because of his compatibility with his peers in their literary standpoint and spirit as well as with the magazine’s policy of focusing on literature and promoting new members.In Shen’s new literary works published in the magazine,the overall aesthetic framework based on his personal experience and the evaluation of natural emotions and formed by the two basic themes of rural and urban areas has begun to emerge.On the one hand,the sharp contrast between urban and rural areas in the works shows that there is no hope for the spiritual estrangement and understanding between Shen Congwen and his contemporaries due to the differences in cultural experience and concepts.On the other hand,it means that his pure emotional and value choices between urban and rural areas must be adjusted because he ultimately could not avoid the impact of modern consciousness and the outside world on the countryside.
