Chloride ion(Cl^-)is a biologically, active electrolyte with important physiological effects.Intravenous fluid infusion therapy in patients in in tensive carr unit(ICU),resulting in abn ormal plasma chloride concentration is a common clinical symptom. In recent years, studies on the effects of hyperchloremia caused hy elevated plasma chloride concentrations on renal dysfunction in critically ill patients have continued. This paper briefly described the physiological basis of Cl^-,including its source, distribution and metabolism. It reviewed the research progress of the relationship between hyperchloremia and renal dysfunction al home and abroad, and analyzed llir potential mechanism of Cl^- affecting renal function,to establish an in-depth study cn the impact of hyperchloremia on the occurrence of renal dysfunction in critically ill patients.
