Decisive Battle in Southern Hunan:An Analysis of the Historical Significance of the Battle of Hengbao

发生于1949年新中国成立之交的衡宝战役,是人民解放军进军中南地区的首次重大战役。在衡宝战役中白崇禧集团军主力尽失,这不仅导致了新桂系的覆亡,亦加剧了国民党内部蒋介石、李宗仁与白崇禧等人之间的紧张关系;而李、白关系之破裂则导致蒋、桂斗法最终以李宗仁被迫"赴美就医"、蒋介石"复行视事"而告终。与此同时,战争的失败及国民党内部的争斗使美国对国民党彻底绝望,争取美援无望的蒋介石政权最终败退撤台。

The Battle of Hengbao,which took place at the turn of the founding of New China in 1949,was the first major battle for the People's Liberation Army to enter the Central South.In the Battle of Hengbao,the main force of the Bai Chongxi Group Army lost,which led to the fall of the new Guilin faction,and also aggravated the tension between the Kuomintang inside Chiang Kai-shek,Li Zongren and Bai Chongxi;and the rupture of the relationship between Li and Bai,led to dispute between Jiang and Gui ended up with Li Zongren being forced to“go to the United States for medical treatment”and Chiang Kai-shek to“re-elect the president”.At the same time,the failure of the war and the internal struggles within the Kuomintang made the United States completely desperate for the Kuomintang and the Chiang Kai-shek regime,which was hopeless for US aid,and eventually retreated to Taiwan.
