Desert has functioned as one of the central images in DeLillo’s literary imagination, yet its artistic representation has scarcely been considered in DeLillo’s scholarship. Focusing on The Names, Point Omega and Zero K by DeLillo, the paper addresses how the image of desert forms a background for DeLillo’s conception of existentialism through the lens of phenomenological destruction, reduction and construction elaborated by Martin Heidegger. The paper contends that desert writing not only conveys DeLillo’s existentialist engagement, but also reflects his critique of reason and modern technological civilization and his concern for the living condition of contemporary American individuals.
