A Woman Warrior Struggling in the Old Southern America——A Re-interpretation of Caddy in The Sound and the Fury

《喧哗与骚动》作为威廉·福克纳的代表作,始终是评论家们关注的焦点,然而他们的注意力大多集中于分析作品的悲剧主题、表现手法、男性角色等,而对于小说的核心人物凯蒂,要么一笔带过,要么简单地将其归为"轻佻放荡的堕落女性",很少能真正关注她在反抗男权专制、重构女性自我的艰难历程中所遭受的磨难以及所表现出来的勇气。本文通过梳理作品中有关凯蒂的零散的叙述和其支离破碎的形象,试图深入挖掘凯蒂在父权制文化压迫下的挣扎和反抗旧传统的努力。

As the representative work of William Faulkner,The Sound and the Fury has been attracting critics’attention.However,they mostly focused on analyzing the tragic them,expression techniques and male characters,etc.As the core character of The Sound and the Fury,Caddy is either ignored or regarded as a"dissolute woman".The critics have neglected Caddy’s courage and effort in the difficult process of rebelling against male despotism and reconstructing herself.This paper intends to use Caddy’s fragmented image in this novel to explore deeply Caddy’s struggle under the patriarchal culture and her unremitting resistance to the old tradition in Southern America.
