《修改过程》是韩少功在文体形式探索中重构历史经验的努力尝试。小说回望了一群“77级”大学生风起云涌的青春岁月,在多层次的对比中展现个人的命运悲剧,以“戏中戏”的结构实现多重叙述者的介入,力图全方位书写与当下流行元素产生碰撞的陌生化的历史。“77级”们被历史“修改”过的、悲喜交加的人生中寄予了韩少功对个体生存经验的深情追忆,表达了其对人生与时代、文学与现实之间复杂关系的真实体悟与深刻思考。
