A Review of Continuation Theory: Contributions, Deficiencies and Teaching Improvement

摘要 梳理了续论的发展历程,从输入、输出、互动、语境、协同等角度分析其对二语习得理论与教学的贡献,发现其存在以下不足:过分依赖学生的自主性,教学过程中缺乏纠错环节,过于强调母语负迁移,通过语言体验来学习语法费时低效,夸大其应用范围。建议在教学活动中采取如下措施来完善以续促学:发挥教师作为课堂教学设计者、引领者、知识传递者、示范者和评价者的作用,在课堂上采取续说活动以便于及时反馈,重视母语正迁移,明确讲解语法来配合续任务,切实考虑续任务的使用范围,灵活应用续任务。 This paper reviews the development of continuation theory, analyzes its contributions from the perspective of input, output, interaction, context and alignment, and finds the following deficiencies: 1) It relies too much on students’ autonomy. 2) It lacks error-correcting. 3) It focuses on L1 negative transfer while ignores L1 positive transfer. 4) It advocates acquiring grammar knowledge from language experience, but this practice is time-consuming and inefficient. 5) It exaggerates its scope of application. This paper then suggests that teachers should: 1) give full play to their roles as designers, leaders, transmitter, demonstrators and evaluators in English teaching. 2) take in-class oral continuation activities to receive timely feedback. 3) attach importance to L1 positive transfer. 4) combine explicit explanation with implicit continuation task. 5) clarify the application scope of continuation tasks and use them appropriately when teach listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation.
