Overview of the Chongqing Negotiations

重庆谈判一度是抗战胜利后政治舞台上的头等大事,关系着中国前途命运,影响着国际形势发展。国共两党谈判代表顺应形势,尊重民意,为争取和平统一、民主建国付出艰辛努力,达成一定共识,签订了《政府与中共代表会谈纪要》。由于国共两党在阶级属性、价值取向、目标追求诸多方面相距太远,使得谈判结果及其实施不尽人意。这次谈判,无论在当时还是对后世,均产生了很大影响——延缓了内战爆发,喊出了党派平等合作、政治民主协商、民族区域自治的先声,具有重要的历史价值。

The Chongqing Negotiations were the top priority in the political arena after winning the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression,which had a bearing on China’s future and destiny as well as the development of the international situation.In response to the trend and respect for the public opinion,the negotiators of the two parties,which had been working hard for peaceful reunification and the establishment of a democratic country,reached a certain consensus and signed the“Summary of the Talks between the Government and the Chinese Communist Party Representatives”.The fact that the two parties were too far apart in terms of class attributes,value orientation and pursuit of goals made the outcome of the negotiations and their implementation unsatisfactory.Those negotiations had great influence both at that time and for future generations—delaying the outbreak of the Chinese Civil War,and calling for equal cooperation between the parties,political consultation and democracy and national regional autonomy.In summary,they have important historical value.
