Fructus Vernoniae is dry mature seeds of Vernonia anthelmintica Willd. belonging to Compositae. It is frequently used as medicinal herbs in the Uyghur medicines and is mainly produced in Xinjiang Uygur aotonomous region and Pakistan. Due to its unique curative effect on the treatment of skin diseases such as vitiligo,it has received more and more attention in recent years. The main chemical constituents of V. anthelmintica are sesquiterpenoids and their dimers, flavonoids and steroids. Due to the unique geographical environment and climate of the place of origin, relatively unique chemical constituents were produced. Most sesquiterpenoids are elemanolides, which are rare in othergenus of Compositae. And a relatively rare 2-(hydroxymethyl) acryloyl group is attached to 8-position of elemanolide. There were also many reports on quality control and pharmacological activities of V. anthelmintica. This paper summarized chemical constituents, quality control and pharmacological activities of this herb with expectation to provide valuable reference for development and utilization of this herb.
