A New interpretation of“Feng Da Te”in Records of the Grand Historian of China:Qin Dynasty

学术界对《史记·秦本纪》中“丰大特”一语争论不休,至今未有定论。“丰”在古文中作“豊”,可以和“禮”通用,“丰大特”即“禮大特”,意为以大特禮敬梓树。“丰大特”所描述的是伐木之前的祭祀活动,是一种广泛存在于世界范围内的文化现象。

The interpretation of the phrase“丰大特”(feng da te)in Records of the Grand Historian of China·Qin Dynasty has always been an issue of controversy in the academic world.Feng(丰,abundance)in ancient Chinese can be feng(豊)which is interchangeable with“禮”(li,sacrifices).“丰大特”actually describes the ritual activities before logging,which is a cultural phenomenon existing widely in the world.In this light,“丰大特”means“禮大特”,that is,to offer abundant sacrifices to the catalpa tree.
