On the Syntactical Tension Reconstruction in Julia Lovell’s Translations of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Novels

借鉴新批评主义和文学文体学主要观点,重点考察英国汉学家蓝诗玲英译中国现当代小说如何通过调整译文句式结构而重制原文语言张力,可以发现:译者通过句法成分变异(如形式/表达重复和词类变异)与句式结构变异(如掉尾结构、从属结构、倒装结构、句式杂合)等文体技巧调节叙事节奏,营造阅读悬念,刻画人物形象,高亮关键信息,带来了“突显”的心理效果;译者的处理有助于目标语读者提升阅读体验和审美情趣,从而为再现中国现当代小说“文学性”,走进海外读者内心世界提供启示。

From the perspectives of new criticism and literary stylistics,this study focuses on how Julia Lovell reshaped the linguistic tension of the original with syntactical devices in her translations of modern and contemporary Chinese novels.It is found that the translator managed to modulate narrative rhythm,to create reading suspense,to shape the image of characters and to highlight key information and ultimately brought prominence in her translations with the employment of stylistic techniques such as sentential component deviation(i.e.formal repetition,expressive repetition,word class deviation etc.)and sentential structural variation(i.e.periodic sentence,subordination,inversion,mixed sentence patterns etc.).Consequently,it helps the target language readers to enhance aesthetic experience during their reading process,which may shed lights on the reproduction of“literariness”and the acceptance of modern and contemporary Chinese novels among international readers.
