The health problems of residents caused by the lack of physical activity have been a common challenge for global cities. With the rapid advancement of urbanization in China, the problem has become increasingly prominent. The research of physical activity needs multidisciplinary teamwork, because the influencing factors are quite complex. The social ecological model integrates the multi-dimensional potential factors affecting physical activity and provides a systematic and comprehensive analytical framework for related research. On the basis of explaining concept, connotation and basic principles of this model, this paper makes a systematic review of the relevant research documents from the two aspects of theoretical cognition and intervention practice. It summarizes some common understandings, general status and the problems in current research about using the model, and there are some suggestions on the further study in this field from the perspective of the theoretical framework of the model, the specificity of the influence factors, the physical environment intervention, and the cooperation between multidisciplinary and multisector. It would be helpful to the relevant studies in China.
