Objective: This study aimed to explore short-term and long-term effects of neuroticism on marital stability, and the mediating role of marital quality between neuroticism and marital stability. Methods: Data were collected from 268 newlywed couples in Beijing from a 3-year longitudinal study. Results: ①At T3 both husbands’ and wives’ neuroticism, marital quality and marital stability were significantly lower than their own T1 or T2 level. ②Wives’ neuroticism at T1 showed both short-term and long-term actor effects, but for husband only short-term actor effect of neuroticism at T1 was found. ③There were partial mediating effects of wives’ marital quality at T1 between wives’ neuroticism at T1 and both husbands and wives’ marital stability at T1. Husbands’ marital quality at T1 only had partial mediating effect between their own neuroticism and marital stability at T1. For long-term effects, only wives’ marital quality at T2 had complete mediating effect between wives’ neuroticism at T1 and wives’ marital stability at T3. Conclusion: Neuroticism has shortterm and long-term effects on marital stability, and marital quality plays a mediating role in neuroticism’prediction of marital stability.
