Epidermal growth factor(EGF)is a small peptide containing 53 amino acid residues, which plays an important role in the maintenance of mucosal barrier function and intestinal repair.Mucous layer is the first barrier of animal intestines, which can prevent harmful bacteria from invading the body.Meanwhile, mucous layer is also an important place where nutrients, water, gas and other substances exchange with the external environment.Mucins(MUCs)are the main component of mucous layer, and a kind of glycoproteins with relatively high molecular mass.EGF can promote the secretion of mucin by stimulating the proliferation of intestinal goblet cells to maintain the constant replacement of intestinal mucus. The structure and function of mucins, the effect of EGF on intestinal mucin secretion and its regulatory mechanism were reviewed to provide some references for studying EGF functions in animal intestinal health regulation.
