The Grass Is Singing,Doris Lessing’s first novel, reveals the harsh reality of the physical and mental oppression of women in a patriarchal society on the one hand, and contains a profound reflection on the relationship between women and nature and the deterioration of the natural environment on the other. As one of the core symbols, the tin roof interweaves the author’s reflections on gender, race and environmental issues, presenting the dualistic thinking mode with dominant relationship as the backup to the marginalization of women and nature.Based on the perspective of environmental identity, this paper proposes that the ethical recognition of natural environment is not only a first step for Mary to escape from the dominant duality, but also the ethical requirement for human being who totally ignores nature as a necessity to acquire self-recognition and identity.
