Henry Yule and Cathay and the Way Thither

亨利·裕尔是19世纪的汉学家,他前半生在英属印度服役,积累了丰富的东方知识;后半生致力于搜集、译注古代中世纪西方作家对东方(尤其是中国)的记载,《东域纪程录丛》是其主要成果之一。1866年问世的这部汉学名著,与他译注的《马可波罗之书》(1871年),对中世纪末叶以前西方世界对东方的相关记载进行了完整的收录与译注,是欧美汉学研究的重要著作。《东域纪程录丛》至今仍是从事东西交流史研究学者的便览手册。

Henry Yule is one of the well-known Sinologists in the 19th century,whose first half career of life in the British army in India equipped him with rich oriental knowledge,and helped him to devote his last half of life to collect,translate and annotate the notices for Orient(especially for China)of all western authors in Ancient and Middle Ages.Cathay and the Way Thither was published in 1866,together with The Book of Ser Marco Polo published in 1871,provided an over-all translation and annotation of those sources,making great contribution to Orientology,especially to Sinology.It has been one of the most valuable guides,from its first publication to the present,for all those interested in studies for East-West relations.
