The Gamelan Style in Debussy’s Piano Works

Gamelan music was introduced to Europe in the late 19th century.The fresh and new playing method and sound effects,which were different from the traditional ways,shocked the musical industry and influenced Debussy’s musical creation greatly.These influences mainly indicate the following aspects:the application of nuclear theme,the processing of agogic tempo,the technique of three sound layers,the tonality of pentatonic scale and the composition of circular music.All of these greatly enriched Debussy’s music language and creative technique,and opened another window for classical music in Europe.
