双语作家英文作品的冷热遭遇溯源——张爱玲与林语堂的读者接受比较

Reason Analysis of Differences in Reader Reception of Chinese Bilingual Writers:A Contrastive Study of Eileen Chang and Yutang Lin

双语作家的英文作品在海外遭遇各异,原因值得深究。文章以张爱玲和林语堂及其英文作品为例,采用历史比较方法,对相关研究文献进行梳理和评述,试图从作品、作家、读者及其所处社会、文化和历史背景等多维视角,比较两位双语作家在海外冷热遭遇的境况,追溯张爱玲冷遇的原因,指出:张爱玲的遭遇,与作品的人物形象、作家的创作理念、社会资源与时代紧密相关,根本原因在于作家对创作“初心”的坚持。

The English works by Chinese bilingual writers are received on the overseas markets in varying degrees.The reasons behind such gaps are worth exploring.The present research,taking Eileen Chang and Yutang Lin as examples,makes a comparative study of them and their works.Based on a critical analysis of proposed reasons,the paper tries to approach the issue through a comprehensive analysis of works,writers,readership and socio-cultural factors.The conclusion is that Zhang's unsatisfactory reception is closely related to her character depiction,creation ideas,social resources and the times,the primary reason being her persistence in her"original creative intentions".
