Born in a Drung minority family in Gongshan Drung and Nu autonomous county, Gao Derong was active in poverty alleviation, having served as a Gongshan County official and as deputy director for Nujiang Prefecture's standing committee. After retiring in 2014, Gao was vice director of the lead group in poverty alleviation in Drung River Township. He had won several previous awards, including the individual honor of "Most Beautiful Fighter" before being honored as a "People's Role Model" in 2019.
