Architecture is not merely a physical object, but also a social process, in which physical space and human beings interact and shape each other. This interrelation is especially significant in rural society, where buildings are deeply embedded in the social network and daily life of the community. Taking Stream-shoots Environment Education Center, a public welfare project in the water source of Beijing as an example, this paper elaborates this two-way process: on the one hand, physical space enhances the community’s collective memory, identity and vitality;on the other hand, people’s cognition and behavior also benefit the construction of the site.
