A Comparative Study of Hawkes’and YNAG’s English Translation of The Story of The Stone From the Perspective of Variation Theory

在当下倡导中国文化走出去的社会语境中,霍克斯英译本《红楼梦》在二十世纪后半叶享誉海内外,引人深思。为了让西方读者在阅读《红楼梦》时感觉是在欣赏英文原版小说,而不是翻译作品,霍译本在文化意象词语、语言规则、副文本等方面,匠心独运,在比较文学变异学视角下审视霍克斯翻译的创造性叛逆,并与杨译本进行对比,可以为中华典籍走出国门提供宝贵借鉴。

In the current social context of advocating Chinese culture to go abroad,Hawkes’English translation of The Story of The Stone has been well known at home and abroad in the second half of the last century,which is thought-provoking.In order to make the Western readers feel that they are appreciating the original English novel rather than the translated work,Hawkes’translation is ingenious in terms of words chosen to construct cultural images,linguistic rules,paratext and so on.Examining the creative treason of Hawkes’English variation from the perspective of the variation theory of comparative literature can provide valuable references for Chinese classics to go abroad.
