Matthew Arnold ’s "Scholar-Gipsy" is often interpreted to be a work infused with Romantism, whereas its relationship with its source of inspiration,Joseph Glanvill ’s The Vanity of Dogmatizing (1661),has elicited little critical attention. The present essay attempts to reconnect"Scholar-Gipsy"to Glanvill’s thinking. It argues that this poem not only involves a lively demonstration of mystic art but also contains an urgent call for the return of reason.
