Because of the characteristics of translation teaching of College English where learners are non-English majors and novices at translation and where teaching is usually conducted in large-scaled classes, the traditional unimodal translation exercise focusing on words now seems incapable of fulfilling the teaching objective of helping learners internalizing translation skills and improving their translation competence. Thus,in light of embodied cognition, the study explores the feasibility and effectiveness of comics as a type of translation exercise in translation classes of College English based on teaching practice and through empirical research. It is indicated that, compared with the traditional unimodal translation exercise, the multimodal translation exercise of comics is much more suitable for translation teaching of College English. It can significantly help improve learners’competence of translation especially when their language competence is at/above the intermediate level.According to embodied cognition, the main reason lies in that multimodality in comics can better arouse learners’interest in translation learning and activate their past experiences, which in turn helps improve their ability of perceiving context and of internalizing translation skills in their initiative learning.
