巴黎和会上,日本以退出巴黎和会与国际联盟相威胁,迫使美国同意将德国在山东的一切权利转交给日本,进而引发了中国的五四运动。《华盛顿邮报》发表大量新闻报道及社论,密切关注山东问题及五四运动,对日本在中国及远东地区的势力扩张、威尔逊的对日妥协政策、中国五四运动的性质、爆发原因及影响进行了深刻分析。《华盛顿邮报》的报道表面上观察、思考中国问题,实际上体现了美国主流媒体在国际秩序变革的关键时期对维护美国国家利益、构建战后国际新秩序等战略问题的深入思考。

At the Peace Conference of Paris,Japan compelled America to agree to turn over to Japan of the German rights in Shantung by threatening pulling out Conference of Paris.Washington Post published a large number of reports and editorials to analyze Shantung issue and May 4th Movement,including Japanese expansion of forces in the Far East,Wilson's policy of compromise towards Japan,the nature and influence of the May 4th Movement,and mechanism of the League of Nations.Observing China on the surface,the reports of Washington Post effectively reflected the deep thinking of mainstream media in the US on the strategic issues in the key period of the change of international order,including safeguarding national interests,constructing a new international order after war,etc.
