Located in the center of downtown Beijing,the Forbidden City is the former imperial palace of the Ming(1368-1644)and Qing(1644-1911)dynasties.It was built between 1406 and 1420.For nearly 500 years of imperial operation,the palace served as the residence and court of 24 emperors.The Forbidden City,which occupies roughly 720,000 square meters,is the largest collction of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.
