American theater scholar Elizabeth Wichmann-Walczak is an apprentice of Shen Xiaomei,a student of famous Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang.Wichmann-Walczak has studied Peking Opera for well over four decades, and she still prefers to call the art form by its Chinese name,"jingju."She invites jingju performers to the United States to train students to perform plays, and she translates scripts into English and compiles publications to promote the traditional Chinese art form."Once our bodies and voices have an in-depth,long-term and personal experience in jingju, guided by master artist-performers,then jingju becomes a part of our own personal aesthetics, and nourishes us for the long term,"Wichmann-Walczak says.
