Throughout thousands of years, Japan has accepted Chinese culture, importing and preserving a huge number of Chinese medical literature, including lost Chinese medical books, Japanese medical manuscripts and research manuscripts. For example, early edited Yi Xin Fang(《医心方》Formulary From the Heart of Medicine) and Wan An Fang(《万安方》) recorded enormous medical books in the Tang and Song Dynasties, reserving important literatures for the study of Chinese classical medical books. In addition, ancient Chinese medical manuscripts including Ming Tang Jing(《明堂经》Mingtang Classic), which were lost in China and later returned to China for publication, making up the vacancy of relative literature. In the middle and late Edo Period, Chinese practitioners in Japan studied Chinese classical medical literatures, among them Mori Tachiyuki, a textual research scholar, wrote many volumes of books with millions of words in his life, which were all retained as manuscripts. Therefore, this article takes his series of book Kao Zhu(《攷注》Annotation) as an example to explore perservation, transmission and value of medical manuscripts during the Edo Period.
