In order to study whether darning as a traditional Chinese textile repairing technology can be used to restore easel painting with raw canvas, this paper first compares the traditional Chinese darning technology with the traditional methods of repairing tear in western painting.Secondly it analyzes the characteristics of easel painting with raw canvas and the difficulty of conservation. Then it compares the advantages and disadvantages of different restoring methods and their applicable conditions by simulation experiments and proposes appropriate improvements for darning of easel painting with raw canvas. Finally, darning technology can be used to restore tear in the actual painting. The results show that the traditional weaving technology can be used to restore easel painting with raw canvas after making appropriate adjustments.Although darning technology has great limitations on the implementation of the object,it has significant advantages in fastness, reversibility and visual effect compared with the traditional Western repairing methods, and is suitable for large-scale tear with moderate raw canvas thickness.
