According to the Unaccusativity Hypothesis, intransitive verbs can be divided into unaccusative verbs and unergative verbs.Theoretical research along with empirical one using techniques like functional magnetic resonance imaging, has indicated that the generation of unaccusative structures and the syntactic processing of unaccusative verbs involve a movement operation.Research on language acquisition and aphasia has shown that the processing of unaccusative verbs is more complicated than that of unergative verbs. In addition, differentiating these two verb subclasses syntactically is another important theoretical issue in foreign academia.Evidence from priming experiments has demonstrated the derivational relation between unaccusative verbs and transitive verbs in spite that there is no consensus in the theoretical literature.Based on the current research abroad, several issues remain to be further explored, including the correlation between left frontal, temporal lobes and the syntactic movement of unaccusative verbs arguments, similarities or differences in processing unaccusative verbs and transitive verbs and their derivational mechanism. With respect to Chinese language research, empirical research in foreign academia can serve as a reference for solving theoretical differences and carrying out interdisciplinary research related to the Unaccusativity Hypothesis in Chinese academia.
