In McEwan’s novel Enduring Love, Jed Parry, a gay man, is viewed as violating social norms, carrying diseases and disengaged from social interaction, experiencing long-time loneliness. After meeting a science writer named Joe Rose in a hot-air balloon accident, Parry tries to get a sense of belonging through Joe, whose exclusion, however, turns Parry from prosocial behavior to aggression. This article reads Parry with the theory of social exclusion developed by C. Nathan DeWall, points out the influence of social exclusion on behavior and thus reveals the importance of social connection and sense of belonging.
