中国的精怪文化与蛇文化是雷峰塔白蛇传的古源,魏晋到唐宋的蛇故事及人蛇之恋是雷峰塔白蛇传的远流,而从明代话本和清代戏曲里,雷峰塔白蛇传的故事得以发展与最终定型。从新的角度讲述或延续老的故事,是人们采用的一些共通的方法和手段。不同时代的人们,在重新叙述白蛇传故事时,由于所处社会背景不同,其重述的文本便带有鲜明的时代色彩。
