Through an in-depth interview, this article combs and analyzes thoughts of the renowned cultural studies scholar John Hartley, and focuses on the understanding of his interpretation of the theoretical approach of "cultural science" and its possible impact on media, communication and journalism studies. Hartley believes that cultural studies should continuously open dialogue with cutting-edge theories of various types of science to promote innovation and reflection of its system. Approaching journalism from a cultural studies perspective and advocating "journalism as human right" can bring about changes in the field. In addition, we should remain optimistic about the prospect of cultural science due to its constructiveness through destructive inquiries.
