梅贻琦与中国科学社北美分社的重组(1930—1931)——兼论中国科学社北美分社的兴衰

Mei Yiqi and the Reorganization of the American Branch of the Science Society of China(1930-1931)——The Rise and Fall of the American Branch of the Science Society of China

20世纪20年代中后期,中国科学社北美分社缺乏组织,发展不顺。1929年底,梅贻琦受总干事杨孝述委托,负责北美分社的重组工作。此后两年间,梅贻琦成功完成了北美分社的重组,开创了有序发展模式,为分社此后数年的稳定发展奠定了基础。哈佛燕京图书馆馆藏相关史料显示,梅贻琦为北美分社的重组做出了开拓性贡献。对这一历史事件加以梳理,可以基本呈现20世纪30年代中国科学社北美分社的兴衰历程。

In the middle and late 1920s,the American Branch of the Science Society of China was disorganized and experienced a tough development.By the end of 1929,entrusted by the Director General Yang Xiaoshu,Mei Yiqi was put in charge of the reorganization of the American Branch.In the following two years,Mei Yiqi successfully completed the reorganization,established an orderly development model,and laid a solid foundation for its steady development in the next few years.Relevant historical materials from Harvard-Yenching Library showed that Mei Yiqi made remarkable contribution toward the reorganization of the American branch.The rise and fall of the American Branch of the Science Society of China in the 1930s could be found by sorting out this historic event.
