Over the past century, in both Western and Chinese academia, Hellenism and Hebraism have often been used together to represent the oppositions in Western cultural and intellectual tradition. Because of the continuous reformulation and different application of the two terms, there exist confusing and conflicting interpretations in contemporary Chinese and Western scholarships. Nevertheless, the translation, interpretation and misunderstanding of Hebraism in China are typically Chinese. By focusing on Matthew Arnold’s "Hellenism and Hebraism", this paper analyzes the primary meaning and connotation of Hebraism and its misreading in China.
