Taiwan’s Chinese opera in the early years of Colonial Taiwan played an important role in the modern history of Chinese opera and a transitional role in the development of Taiwan’s Chinese opera.By digging into the Japanese newspapers of the time, this article explores the Chinese opera scenes in Colonial Taiwan.Mass media provides a distinctive perspective from which we could see the administration of Chinese opera by the Japanese colonial government,Taiwan opera performed only by actresses, modern theaters built and run solely for Chinese opera, the interactions between troupes from China's Mainland and those from Colonial Taiwan.Mass media contributes to the literature on the situation of Chinese opera in Colonial Taiwan, which is beneficial to historical studies in the aesthetics shared by China's Mainland and Taiwan.
