Internet协议当前主要的版本是IPv4,用于通过Internet发送数据,并使不同服务之间的能够正常交互。但是,该协议具有很大的局限性,例如最大寻址空间和一些已知的安全问题。其中安全问题在很多方面是IPv4与生俱来的,因为当时整个环境被认为是友好的,设计时就没有考虑把"安全"作为决定因素。当然,针对这些不足,并考虑到全球网络的快速增长,也引进了不少新技术来解决这些问题,如SSL/TLS和IPSec。
