The“evil”in western literature is rebellious to traditional morality and collective interests, and the evil is also the driving force for the development of virtue. The protagonists of Hesse’s novelsarenot villains, rather they are all the adolescents pursuing self-fulfillment in their own life.Their“evil”is mainly reflected in the rebellion against their father and their involvement in the mediocre life, which are the necessary means for them to grow up,tobe self-aware andidentify themselves.
