Melissa Dell was awarded the 2020 John Bates Clark Medal by the American Economic Association for her contributions to economic development and political economy.Exploring the specific political and historical background,Dell examines the emergence and long-term impact of institutions in detail, and analyzes the channels through which these impacts persist. She provides empirical evidence for understanding the long-term development of political economy. In addition, her research points out that some policies aimed at eliminating instability can be counterproductive.Dell investigates specific research questions from unique perspectives, using rigorous methods and rich data to design elegant empirical strategies and identify credible causal effects, thus creating a new direction for research in related fields. With a focus on Dell's research on the long-term impact of politics, violent conflicts and economic development, this paper sorts out her academic achievements,in order to understand her original contributions to research topics and methods.
