Rethinking Translator Ethics in the New Era

语言服务业的快速崛起、翻译职业化的纵深推进、翻译技术的日新月异作为我国新时代翻译行业的发展特点,正深刻影响着译前、译中、译后、译外活动中译员的伦理实践。新时代语境下,切斯特曼总结的五种伦理模式,道义论与目的论的道德哲学观以及职业伦理与个人伦理相结合的模式,在指导译员伦理行为和评价译员道德决策时发挥着重要作用;同时,约纳斯的责任伦理可作为上述伦理模式的补充,用以应对技术发展带来的翻译伦理新挑战。

The quick rise of the language service industry,the deepening of translation professionalization and the rapid advancement of translation technology constitute the defining features of the new era of the translation sector in China,which are profoundly affecting translators’ethical practice in the pre-,ongoing-,post-and extra-translation activities.In the new era,the five ethical models summed up by Chesterman,the theories of deontology and teleology,as well as the professional-cum-personal ethical model are playing their respective roles in guiding the ethical behavior of translators and interpreters and evaluating their moral decision-making.Besides,the author proposes Hans Jonas’ethics of responsibility as a supplement to the existing ethical models to help cope with the new challenges of translation ethics brought by a technology-intensive era.
