This paper is to investigate the evolution of Chinese funeral and interment culture in Hong Kong after the war,so as to discuss the relationship between urbanization and the changes of daily life of Hong Kong citizens. With the rapid growth of population, the changes in material life and the popularization of westernization, funeral culture,as a part of the daily life of Hong Kong citizens, had also undergone great changes.Different from the mainland, public power plays a rather limited role in promoting the evolution of Hong Kong’s funeral culture. After the war,Hong Kong’s population continued to increase, land was seriously insufficient, sites for earth burial were hard to find, and the dense population made it impossible to maintain the past tradition of funeral at home. The colonial government limited the funeral places to the undertaker’s and other designated places(such as hospitals or specific religious places),resulting in changes in the funeral rites of Hong Kong citizens. In addition, the rapid pace of life in modern society makes it impossible for ordinary people to spend more time on funeral ceremonies. The change of citizens’attitude towards remains has also made cremation the dominant choice.
