Fresh Wind of an Age in Turmoil:The Construction and Interpretation of Policewomen in the Republic of China(1920s—1940s)

20世纪20—40年代,全国各主要城市女警察职业兴起,且蓬勃发展,作为新兴的女性职业,女警察受到各界媒体的关注,媒体对女警察的招募、薪水、日常工作、业绩等诸多事项进行了详细报道,构建出了女警察平凡而伟大的形象。这些报道基本上是正面的,这在充斥着战争、凶杀、盗匪、欠薪等负面消息的民国报纸中是不多见的。女警察成了内忧外患、社会动荡之下的升斗小民的宽心丸,堪称混浊年代的清新之风。同时,女警察职业的兴起也是民国时期妇女解放、女权兴起的一部分,体现了女子受教育的程度以及她们的人生观、世界观和价值观。

From 1920s to 1940s,female policemen emerged in major cities across the country and flourished gradually.As a new female profession,policewomen attracted much attention of mess media.Newspapers made detailed reports on the recruitment,salary,daily work,and performance of women police officers,thus built an ordinary but great image of them.These reports were basically positive reports,and such positive coverage was rare in the Republican newspapers which were usually full of negative news like war,homicide,bandits and so on.Such policewoman became a great relief for the people under internal and external social unrest,a fresh wind in an age of turmoil.At the same time,the rise of police as a profession for women is also part of the women’s liberation and the rise of women’s rights in the Republic of China,which reflects the women’s education level and their outlook on life,world and values.
