艾乔恩《墨子》译介研究

On Ian Johnston’s Translation of Mozi

艾乔恩是首位完成《墨子》英语全译的外国学者,其译本在西方汉学界产生了广泛影响,但其译介活动迄今未能引起国内学界的关注.本文在简单介绍艾乔恩及其翻译活动、简要分析艾译体例的基础上,重点探讨了艾译《墨子》的译介特色,发现其特色主要体现在四个方面:一、善选底本,洞悉原作;二、直译存真,务求信雅;三、注疏详备,阐微发幽;四、服慵读者,启牖后学.这些特色正是促成艾译《墨子》成为经典的重要原因,对艾译《墨子》特色进行深入探讨对提高中国典籍英译质量具有重要的借鉴意义.

Ian Johnston is the first foreign scholar to finish a complete English translation of Mozi.His translation has exerted a wild influence on the Western Sinology,but attracted almost no attention of the domestic academia so far.On the basis of a brief introduction of Ian Johnston’s translation activities and his rendition of Mozi,the paper focuses on Ian Johnston’s translation characteristics of Mozi and finds that they are mainly reflected in four aspects:firstly,a good selection of the original work helps the translator to get an in-depth understanding of the spirit of the work;secondly,literal translation keeps a balance between faithfulness and elegance,which makes Johnston’s rendition much more readable;thirdly,numerous annotations and commentaries help to elucidate and represent Mo Zi’s philosophy in a clearer way;and lastly,a reader-friendly rendition is more accessible to the general English readers who wish to deepen their knowledge of the Chinese traditional thoughts.A deep analysis of Ian Johnston’s translation of Mozi is conducive to improve the translation and spread of the Chinese classics in the world.
