The Red Cross Movement and the Construction of Modern Nation-State in China

在晚清民族国家建构的话语体系下,红十字会作为民族主义和现代性的表征进入公众视野。其后,这场运动积极灌注民族主义情感,推动传统向现代更生,以波澜壮阔的表现为推进中国现代民族国家的建构提供了新的平台和路径。在民族主义无孔不入的浸染下,红十字会被塑造为民族认同的凝缩象征。国人踊跃参与红十字运动,表达对现代民族国家的认同。概言之,红十字运动以其独特的价值强化了国人民族心理和现代意识的塑造,培育了国人对现代民族国家的政治认同,从而成为中国现代民族国家建构中的重要一环。

Under the discourse system of the nation-state construction in the late Qing Dynasty,the Red Cross entered the public view as a representation of nationalism and modernity.Since then,the movement had actively infused the nationalism sentiment,promoted the modern rejuvenation of tradition,and provided a new platform and path for advancing the construction of modern nation-state in China with its spectacular performance.Under the pervasive influence of nationalism,the Red Cross Society had been shaped as a condensed symbol of national identity.Chinese people enthusiastically participated in the Red Cross movement and expressed their recognition of modern nation-state.In a word,the Red Cross movement,with its unique value,had strengthened the formation of the national psychology and modern consciousness of the Chinese people as well as cultivated the political identification of the Chinese people with the modern nation-state,thus becoming an important link in the construction of the modern nation-state in China.
