A Preliminary Study on the Supply and Marketing of Meat in the Military Communities of the Early Tang Dynasty--Focusing on Dunhuang and Turpan Military Documents

摘要 唐前期军中马匹等牲畜死亡后的处置,为剥皮纳库、畜肉出售。出售环节中,军人以象征性低价购买,军外平民则按市价交易。唐代行军中设置临时账房,统兵军官将兵士钱财集中存入,随时支取,向随军商人购买肉食等军需品,军中向士兵放贷的制度亦随之产生。这反映出彼时西州地区商品货币经济的发展水平。 In the early Tang dynasty,the dead animals and livestock used for consumption by the army would be skinned,following which the skins would be kept in a warehouse for further repurposing while the meat was sold at a market.Meat provided by the military supplier could be bought by soldiers at a discount,while civilians outside the army had to trade at market prices.Furthermore,temporary accounts were set up in the military communities of the Tang Dynasty in order to procure supplies en masse for particular garrisons.Military commanders would collect the soldiers’money together in a single account and draw from it at any time for the purchase of meat and other military supplies from merchants accompanying the army.This became a widespread system of finance and purchasing between soldiers and military administration in the Tang dynasty.This study uses the historical records on military trading and finance to research the developmental status of the commodity and currency economy of Xizhou in the Tang dynasty.
